Gain a deeper understanding into the beautiful ancient city of Bagan in central Myanmar with this full-day tour. The unspoilt land is rich with other-worldly temples, lush verdant greenery and stunning history. Gain a deeper understanding into life in this mystical city with a socially responsible trip designed to benefit local life. The morning will be a veritable treat for the taste buds. Begin with a short drive to Nyaung U to meet a native family producing Pone Yay Gyi, a local savoury delicacy made from fermented soybean paste. Sate your salty cravings before moving onto something a little sweeter and visit an artisan crafting plum jams – a delectable contrast created with sour plums and cane sugar.  Next, visit a cheroot workshop, and witness this fascinating process as local women young and old roll thin cigars by hand. From the sweet and smoky to the spiritual, the next stop is Kyan Sit Thar Umin Monastery, a fascinating and unpretentious structure that serves as a place of lodging for Buddhist monks. Here, learn about the important role that Buddhism plays in Burma’s daily life and, for a small donation of drinks and snacks, get the chance to talk with the gracious monks who, despite their limited English, are happy to chat. After a well-deserved lunch at Sanon Hospitality Training Restaurant, a social enterprise focused on vocational training for Myanmar’s at-risk youth. This afternoon will focus on three socially responsible enterprises which benefit the local life.  First, visit the charming MBoutik with its eclectic collection of textiles, rattan and jewellery, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to benefit vulnerable women in the region.  Next up, pay a trip to Pomelo, a glorious boutique full of bright colours and handmade goods which shines a spotlight on free trade, with all produce sourced from the smaller villages surrounding Bagan.  Last but by no means least, pay a visit to a local sand painter.  Each of these detailed works of art on canvas take up to three weeks to produce and many seek to replicate the beauty of Myanmar’s ancient temples.  After a full day well spent, be transferred back to the hotel in time for dinner.
